Connections and threads
Dependent on the geographical location, environment and other factors, the industry uses different types of threads. Typical thread types are – NPT (National Pipe Taper), NPS (National Pipe Straight), BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper), and BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel).
NPT (National Pipe Taper) – Tapered
- Common process connection in the USA and in the oil/petroleum industries
- Tapered thread – pressure tight seal made on the thread itself
NPS (National Pipe Straight) – Parallel
- Common process connection in the USA
- Parallel thread – pressure tight seal made using a sealing washer
BSPT (British Standard Pipe) – Tapered
- Process connection in the rest of the world – not common
- Tapered thread – pressure tight seal made on the thread itself
BSPP (British Standard Pipe) – Parallel
- Common process connection in the rest of the world
- Parallel thread – pressure tight seal made using a sealing washer
